Vets Breakfast 2011

Giving Thanks – A U.S. Navy Veteran and his wife partake in the free breakfast offered to

U.S. Armed Forces Veterans on Friday at Great Bend Regional Hospital.

The old adage states that “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” That adage applies to U.S. Armed Forces Veterans. Great Bend Regional Hospital honored them with a free breakfast Friday, during Veterans Day.

Several hundred area Veterans and their spouses gathered at the hospital for the breakfast, most of them sitting in the lobby, which was decorated especially for them and set up with a serving line of eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits, gravy, fruits breads and pastries.

“This is a nice gesture,” said Larry Mitchur, an Army Veteran who served in Vietnam. “I was here last year, too. This is a nice place with friendly people. I really enjoy their recognition of our service.”

It’s the second consecutive year that GBRH has served breakfast to the Vets on their special day of recognition, in what now becomes an annual event for the hospital.

GBRH employee Teri Thomas worked her first Veterans Day breakfast. As she steadily handed out cups of coffee, juice and water to the long line of guests, she did so with a smile on her face. Though the pace was hectic, she enjoyed the experience.

“It’s always a good day when you can serve the veterans,” said Thomas. “It’s a small token of appreciation compared to what they’ve done for us.”

No matter how small the token, the offering has certainly resonated with the area Veterans. For two consecutive years, large numbers of them have partaken in the Veterans Day feast.

“We’ve tried to make sure the Veterans know they are more than welcome here,” said Pam Chambers, GBRH Administrator. “They are so grateful. It makes this event that much more enjoyable and rewarding, knowing how well it has been received by them. We’re honored to serve them.”
